Monster Cookies

These cookies are not as scary as they sound ....
the"Monster" part is that it makes a monster size batch!

I used to make these for Halloween treats when the
neighbourhood kids came trick or treating.
We live in a very rural area and that meant that
there was only a handful of children who came to the house.
(I'll confess that I begged their parents to bring them over).
Those were the good old days when homemade treats were still allowed
and peanut allergies were rarely heard of.

MONSTER COOKIES:
This makes a Monster size batch (approx. 20 dozen)! Half the ingredients for a more manageable batch.
1 lb. Butter - softened
4 Cups Brown Sugar
4 Cups White Sugar
1 Dozen Eggs
3 lbs. Crunchy Peanut Butter (approx. 5 1/4 Cups)
8 tsp. Baking Soda
18 Cups Oatmeal
1 lb. Chocolate Chips (approx. 2 1/2 Cups)
1 Cup Peanuts
1 lb. Smarties or M & Ms to decorate the unbaked cookies.
Cream together the butter and sugars. Beat in the eggs and peanut butter. Combine the oatmeal, baking soda, chocolate chips and peanuts and stir into the wet ingredients.
Spoon or scoop cookie dough onto baking sheet.  Top the unbaked cookies with several smarties.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.  These can be easily over baked – take them out while cookies are high – they will drop flat, soft and chewy when removed from oven.

Do you remember when homemade treats
were given out at Halloween?

Till next time ......... pass the milk please!

  1. Ha! I do remember the homemade treats. We grew up in a large Mexican/American part of town and Halloween was a huge event. We walked into homes back then for special treats. Not nowadays. Our first year in Washington with our own kids we lived in an area where the homes were on 1 acre or larger lots. We were determined to make to all the homes on our hill. The homeowners were so excited to see us they emptied their candy bowls into our kids bags. It had been years since they had gotten any trick-or-treaters! I'd love one of your cookies right about now...

  2. Wouldn't it be fun to be able to give homemade treats again? I grew up with some pretty good cooks as neighbors and popcorn balls, cookies, and homemade candy were always given out. Miss those days. Your cookies look delicious and even if I can't give them out, I would love to make them.

  4. Oh, I was shopping for treats this morning. I wish I would have thought to get smarties to make these.
I notice yours is a monster size recipe too! I guess in today's world it is great to have a gluten free cookie that is so good! =)

    1. Thanks Anneliese - I had no idea that rolled oats are gluten free - go figure! That's good to know..... The header is a picture of our recent family reunion. It features things from "home".

  7. Those were a staple at our home in years gone by as well...though I don't recall making them for Halloween. 1/4 batch would make more sense over here these days as well.

    Love your new header!

  8. I just noticed - no flour! I'll have to remember these for my dil who has celiac disease.

When I was little, the seniors at our Seniors Apt bldg used to make home-made fudge - 5 pieces in a bag. It was my favourite treat of the evening.
